Autumn 2025 ME Admissions
The Mechanical Engineering major in the School of Engineering & Technology admits students once per year for Autumn quarter only.
Please read this page carefully for instructions on when to submit your application and details on the review timeline.
Autumn Application Opens: December 27, 2024
Application Deadline: July 1st, 2025
*If the program does not fill by July 1st, the deadline may be extended*
When should I apply?
If you are on track to complete the prerequisites no later than the end of summer 2025, you may submit the ME application any time after you've been admitted to UW Tacoma. Please note that Electrical Circuits is now a graduation requirement and only option for admission to ME.
If you are not a current student at UW Tacoma, your first step is applying for admission to the university. You will need to be admitted to UWT in order to submit your ME application with your UW student ID number. See the UW Tacoma Admissions page for information on the application process and deadlines. UW Seattle and UW Bothell students seeking to transfer to UW Tacoma will also need to have a transfer application on file in order to be considered for admission. If you are not admitted to UWT, you cannot be admitted to the ME major, but you may hold off on accepting your offer of admission to UWT until you have your ME admissions decision.
Admissions Review Timeline
The ME admissions committee will review applications on a rolling basis with a status update in 1-2 weeks. Applicants may be admitted conditionally (pending the successful completion of remaining prerequisites), or the admissions committee may hold an applicant's application until additional prerequisite courses are completed. If you have questions about your eligibility for conditional admission, contact a SET Advisor. Please note that all enrollment conditions must be met prior to the start of autumn quarter, or you may be removed from the major. Students will be notified of status updates and admission decisions by email and in the application system.
Application Requirements
Students are required to upload the following documents into their application form.
- Unofficial college transcript(s): Please submit transcripts for all college coursework.
- Resume: Your resume should be in the professional format you would use when applying for a job. Experience in the ME field is not expected or required, but you should include your employment history whether it's related or not. If you don’t have work experience, your resume can focus on things like your education, extracurricular activities, recognition and awards, internships (paid or unpaid), research experience, or volunteerism.
- Personal statement: The purpose of the personal statement questions is to give the ME admissions committee a better understanding of your interest in this program. Write a brief statement (max 500 words) to the following questions:
- Share what led you to choose to study mechanical engineering.
- Tell us about your academic goals and career aspirations. How will the ME program help you achieve your goals?
- Describe any experiences (e.g., work, internship, research, leadership, or extracurricular activities) that will give us a better understanding of your academic interests and professional goals. If your experiences have given you a unique perspective that you believe will add to our student body you may choose to include that in your statement.
- If applicable, describe any challenges or hardships you have overcome in pursuing your education. For example: serious illness; impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic; disability; first generation in your family to attend college; significant financial hardship or responsibilities associated with balancing work, family, and school. If these challenges have impacted your academic record, please address this briefly.
Remember that the personal statement is your opportunity to demonstrate your ability to communicate effectively in writing. Please pay attention to content, as well as form, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
Selection Criteria
ME applicants are evaluated on the following criteria:
- Completion of prerequisite courses
- Grades in prerequisite courses (individually and cumulatively)
- Overall previous college academic performance
- Content and form of personal statement and resume
- Completion of at least 45 college-level credits
ME is a capacity-constrained major and we may not be able to offer admission to all applicants who meet the minimum requirements. Strong applicants typically have grades of 3.0 and higher in prerequisite math, science, and engineering courses, as well as a solid cumulative GPA.
New Student Registration
Students are eligible to register for autumn ME courses once they are admitted into the major and when their registration period opens. We reserve space in the required ME courses for all new majors. With this in mind, you may wish to register for an alternate autumn schedule on your registration date. You will be able to update your schedule with your ME courses once your change of major is processed.
Please note that ME is a full-time program that operates in a cohort model, with students progressing through the majors courses together. The ME Schedule Planning Grid is a helpful tool for understanding and planning your path through the major.
Scholarships
Newly admitted students are eligible to apply for SET program scholarships. The application process occurs during summer quarter with an application deadline in August.
