Autumn 2025 CE & EE Admissions

The Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering majors admit students once per year for autumn quarter only. There is one application form for both programs, and applicants may only apply to either CE or EE. However, admitted students can switch programs (if they meet the prerequisites for both) any time before the start of autumn quarter.

Autumn Application Opens: December 27, 2024
Application Deadline: August 31, 2025

Applicants who apply to the Computer Engineering major, are also eligible to double major in Computer Science without applying separately to Computer Science. Please speak with an advisor if you are interested in this option.

Advising is available at this link https://www.tacoma.uw.edu/set/advising

The CE/EE application will remain open until the start of fall quarter (as long as space is still available in the program). The application may close at any time after the priority deadline once the programs reach capacity.

When should I apply?

If you are on track to complete the prerequisites no later than the end of summer 2025, you may submit the CE or EE application any time after you have been admitted to UW Tacoma.  Students typically apply to CE or EE once they’ve completed majority of the prerequisite courses (CE Prerequisites; EE Prerequisites). Applicants must earn a minimum grade of 2.0 in each prerequisite course and maintain a minimum cumulative prerequisite GPA of 2.5 to qualify for admission.

If you are not a current student at UW Tacoma, your first step is applying for admission to the university. You will need to be admitted to UWT in order to submit your CE or EE application with your UW student ID number. See the UW Tacoma Admissions page for information on the application process and deadlines. UW Seattle and UW Bothell students seeking to transfer to UW Tacoma will also need to have a transfer application on file in order to be considered for admission. If you are not admitted to UWT, you cannot be admitted to the CE or EE major, but you may hold off on accepting your offer of admission to UWT until you have your CE or EE admissions decision.

Admissions Process & Review Timeline

The CE/EE admissions committee will review applications on a rolling basis, with a status update in 1-2 weeks.  Applicants may be admitted conditionally (pending successful completion of remaining prerequisites), or the admissions committee may hold an applicant's application until prerequisite courses are completed.  Students will be notified of updates and admissions decisions by email and in the application system.  If you have questions about your eligibility for conditional admission, contact a SET Advisor.  Please note that all enrollment conditions must be met prior to the start of autumn quarter or you may be removed from the major.

CE and EE are capacity-constrained majors and we may not be able to offer admission to all applicants who meet the minimum requirements. Strong applicants typically have grades of 3.0 and higher in prerequisite math, science, engineering and programming courses, as well as a solid cumulative GPA.

Selection Criteria

Strong applicants typically have grades of 3.0 and higher in prerequisite math, science, engineering and programming courses, as well as a solid cumulative GPA.

Applicants are evaluated on the following criteria:

  • Completion of some or all prerequisite courses
  • Grades in prerequisite courses -- individually and cumulatively
  • Overall previous academic performance, consistency in grades, repeats and grade trends are all considered
  • Completion of at least 45 college-level credits

Please note the the CE/EE application does not require a personal statement at this time. Letters of recommendation are not accepted.

New Student Registration

Students are eligible to register for their major courses once they are admitted into the program. We reserve space for all new majors. With this in mind, you may wish to register for an alternate autumn schedule on your registration date. You will be able to update your schedule once your change of major is processed.

CE and EE are full-time majors that operate in a cohort model, with students traveling through their junior and senior year courses together. Please see the schedule planning grids to determine what you will take each quarter.
